My Vegan Story

In 2015. I started following we need to live more, a blog written by Ella Grace Denton, whom used to be a YouTuber. I'd followed her YouTube when she started that out too, and I found that she was someone I looked up to, although she's the same age as me. I liked her ideas and her creativity, she's since become one of my favourite bloggers.

She went vegan, and she spoke about it on her blog, and on her instagram. I kind of got where she was coming from, and I do love animals, however I wasn't converted straight away. Which when I look back on now, I realise how ignorant I was.

I am a strong believer in karma and fate, so when I'd been reading about veganism, and then got food poisoning from chicken on the same day, I took it as a sign. I decided to find some documentaries to watch, and I'd heard about Earthlings, which Ella had mentioned on instagram. 15 minutes into Earthlings and I was a fully converted vegan.

I know that some people think Earthlings is "bullshit propaganda" but I don't think like that. I have always been a sensitive person, and I remember when I was younger I told my mum I don't want to eat lamb anymore, because when we'd drive to my grandparents house, we'd drive past lambs in the fields on the way and I thought they were cute. Why would I want to eat a cute baby animal? I'd never really seen the other animals I ate, so I guess that's why I didn't click. Now I am an adult, and I can make my own choices. I only wanted to make the right choices from now on.

I did some more research, I watched Gary Yourofsky's "the best speech you will ever hear" and I watched a debate which was 2 hours long, and veganism won. I can't remember the name of it now, but if I find it I will link it. I looked online for recipe's and nutritional advice, and already I felt great, and I was only just starting!

I've written up a list of reasons that I am vegan, to sum it all up, and if you have any questions about them, feel free to ask me and I will explain them more.

I am vegan because I care about the planet, I love nature.
I am vegan because I love  animals, and I don't want to cause them suffering or harm.
Iam vegan because there are children in the world who are starving, and instead of feeding them, we feed animals, to kill them and turn them into meat, to feed people in the west.
I am vegan because it takes 441 gallons of water to create a pound of beef, and some people have to go without water.
I am vegan because meat is known to cause disease such as cancer.
I am vegan because dairy milk is meant for calves, not for humans.
I am vegan because people are injured every day in slaughterhouses, because they can't get a better job, and they are treated like garbage.
I am vegan because the world is vastly overpopulated and breeding more animals just adds to that.
I am vegan because there are over 77,000 edible plants in the world that I want to try, and experiment with.
I am vegan because eating a plant based diet makes my skin glow, my insides feel good and it makes me happy.
I am vegan because I want my fridge to look like the rainbow, not like a morgue.

There are so many more.

Since being vegan, I have lost weight, my skin has cleared up, my nails are stronger. I have developed a new love for cooking, I get excited about food more than ever, I am more careful about what I put into my body, get excited when I go grocery shopping because there's always something new that I find. I save money on my groceries, I can eat a hearty, filling, healthy meal for less than £5. I have influenced my friends and family to make more ethical choices, people recognize me for something. Being vegan is my identifier, people recognize me and will say "you're the vegan girl" when before no one noticed me. I finally feel like I have a purpose, something to be passionate about. I have something constructive to do with my time, whether its spreading the message or baking vegan cakes, or coming up with a new recipe.

I hope that if you have come to this blog because you are thinking of going vegan, this has helped you. I will list some helpful links below:
